I'm a long time Sonar user...w/XP (WDM) it's incredibly stable. NTFS is the native system to XP...it is a little more efficient.

I've noticed no changes with SP1.
On the other hand there was a Microsoft file update fairly recently wich supposedly made harddisk data more robust according to the blurb.
I generally use Windows Update regularly (manually) and have not had any problems with it.

XP's been good to me, SMP started working properly as soon as I installed it.

The Service Pack 1 is more for security reasons on certain aspects of the OS but there is an important part of it that does help certain programs run better.
Not sure why that is truly but it helped me solve a plaguing issue I had recently. It was wierd but it was solved by adding the SP1
I do recommend it now.
