Lots of candidates at that price. My Mojave MA-200 has been my go-to vocal mic with the AEA R84 as backup if I detect any shrillness. Each of those is basically $1K. But everyone has a competitor at $1K - Neumann, Bock, Blue, Shure, AKG, AT. The problem isn't ideas but making a choice.
With that budget you'd be best served to use a retailer that would allow a test of various brand names. At that level, as Bob said there are a LOT of very good entries and of complete variety of types mics, ie: condenser, ribbon, tube, even dynamic.
