I use a Blueberry mic into a RNC and Great River preamp. He vocals sound very up front and warm yet clear. On his new album or Audioslave mid temp stuff where you can really hear his vocals it sounds like verb is there but can't figure out what type. My voice is similar before someone brings that up ha! EQ tips, verb whatever. Unfortunately link is video which has compressed audio but imagine it big and fat but clear

Which leads me to another topic of reverbs but that is another post. Smile

‘Up close’ may have more to do with the compression that was used. I find the subtle inflections in the voice are brought to the surface with compression. Compression will boost the softer passages for you so you hear more detail.
Typically if a mic has good capsule, and your room is very dry you should not be able to tell the distance the singer is from the mic. Of course you can get really good takes if the room’s natural verb is good. But you will also be able to hear the distance. For loud –soft –loud vocal take noticing the distance might be an issue.
