I am recording some of my songs on a friend's computer, and my vocals seem to overpower the other instruments just as I put them loud enough to be heard. The voice sounds to bassy, not clear enough. I'm not sure what it is, but it sounds as if the vocals aren't part of the song, but a loud, unpretty, Karaoke performance. I don't have a great voice, but I know the recording should sound better than it does. Any recommendations for processing, panning, or overall tips to get vocals placed well in the mix.

Try rolling off some low end. Start with a Low Shelf or Hi-Pass @ 100Hz, see where that gets you. You might even go higher. It is quite common to roll off the low end on a vocal. Sometimes, depending on context, you might want to cut a little around 800Hz on a male or about 1.6kHz on a female.

Try using a compressor first, then if you need to add reverb do this too. You may need to EQ a touch to get it to sit in it's place.
