Bill,

I really appreciate the offer, but that would kind of defeat the original purpose. I want to sit in on a session to see what goes on. I don't think we can do that via the net. Now, if I can't find someone in Phoenix to help out, I just may have to do that. It's going to be a couple of months before the project is ready to master anyway, so I'll have a little time to put together the funding. Please don't think I'm blowing you off, I just really want to see what goes on during mastering. Thanks for all your help.

Styles,
If you do get the opportunity to sit in on a real mastering session you will notice…..
1. A perfect listening environment....perfect! Many times there is hundreds of thousands of dollars in the rooms alone.
2. As close to as possible, a perfect monitoring system. No added coloration, dynamic range beyond the norm, resolution up the ying yang...major sonic overkill.
3. Equipment you never even knew existed. Lots of it. Some of these places have speaker cables that cost more than our entire recording systems!
4. Engineers with years and years of experience, that can hear stuff you and I can't …. and didn't even know existed!
5. A select and elite group of people who have been deciding for years what records will sound like. The final filter, setting industry standards.

It is apparent that your goal is to try to learn how to master. I encourage you to go ahead and master your stuff yourself, trading files with Bill or other experienced mastering engineers over Internet for critique (for a fee of course). You won't ever get results like you would at a real mastering facility but you may be able to get results with your equipment and environment that you can live with and that achieve your final goals. Mastering is a profession that is performed by people who have risen to the top by virtue of their experience, abilities and good taste. ….. Fats

Man, I can't believe how helpful you guys have been. It's quite awesome, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Bill, I will contact you as soon as my mixdown is finished. I still have some tracking to do, and I work a full time gig with the fire department, so I'm pretty much limited to evenings and weekends. Anyway, as I said before, it may be a couple of months before I'm ready, but I'll definitely contact you then.

Thanks again for all your responses, you guys are great.
