Hi,
I'm upgrading some components - would be interested in thoughts on a new AI. I have my eye on the Mackie Onyx 400f and 1200f's: good preamps, 96khz capability (I won't use 192), headphone / control room monitoring & enough I/O for my needs. However it only comes in Firewire and I'd prefer PCIe if possible.
Any recommendations on something similar only with PCIe?
If not, does anybody have experience with these?
For reference, I'm currently using MOTU 1224, Sonar 8, Steinberg Midex-8 for MIDI and a Mackie 1642 VLZ Pro for headphone / control room monitoring & preamps. The new unit would replace the 1224 and analog Mackie mixer. The 400/1200f's could also replace the Midex-8 for my needs (I only do one Midi channel at a time), but am happy to continue using the Midex if the AI doesn't have MIDI.

Have you looked at the RME Fireface800. This is an external firewire interface.
If you want the PCIe card instead I would look into the RME HDSPe cards. They have plenty of expansion.
I have no interest or connection with RME!! LOL
But I did go the Mackie route (which I also liked) but preferred the RME unit....more stable...no regrets so far..
Anyway I would look at the specs on both and make your comparisons.
I have used 192Khz recording on some piano tracks and it is very clean but uses a ton of memory...but I tend to stay at 48Khz...

I don't necessarily have an issue with Firewire, but currently have PCI and have had great stability, as well as PCIe having higher throughput than FW (from what I understand), so thought it worthwhile to solicit thoughts on any PCIe devices I hadn't stumbled across. Apologies if that approach seems odd to you.

I don't think people are noticing these days that most all audio interfaces are going external? Desktop machines are no longer necessary devices unless you have a specific card that needs to be installed. Much of what she will not find any more for audio except when it comes to ProTools and/or other times of plug-in devices from Universal Audio, TC Electronics, etc.
Doesn't anybody but bother to look at electronic musician magazine? Home recording? Mix? Pro Sound News? Professional Audio Review?
The information is out there are people. You only need to look up once in awhile and read the advertisements. Either that, or go down to your local Guitar Center and see what is available. If you haven't seen it advertised? It probably doesn't exist.
