FAQ

When to choose to use a compressor versus a VCA for the ducker

For the specific application of voice-over in videos, I almost always go for a VCA, as it tends to give greater clarity to the voice (particularly with male speakers). Of course, most compressors can be set up to act like a VCA, at least over the dynamic range needed for ducking, and the attack/release controls are usually more flexible in a compressor.

What is SIDE Chain - for audio or video production

Sidechaining a compressor for example, to duck music out of the way for speech - You send music through a compressor, but send the vocal mic into the sidechain. When the announcer speaks, the compressor pushes the music out of the way.

If you're looking for a real-world example, listen to the DJ talent on almost any radio station.

I use sidechain to improve sub focus between a kick and bass etc etc etc. Software is hands down superior for this.

Good one, Marco!

If you were thinking of doing any revisions to the video, it might be interesting to add examples of when you would choose to use a compressor versus a VCA for the ducker. For the specific application of voice-over in videos, I almost always go for a VCA, as it tends to give greater clarity to the voice (particularly with male speakers).
