trim control

Is it ok to trim the master fader if the mixdown levels at the master get to hot. Or do we loose any detail, and its best to leave the master at unity, and work around with the mix. Im in such a situation, individual tracks not clipping but the master is.

I have Cool Edit 2.0 and when i record my guitar into waveform blocks i always have trouble cutting them and trimming them so when i try to loop my guitar it skips or it doesn't flow smoothley. Does Anyone have any tips or stuff to help me
