HI folks!
Here in Brazil people are very excited about the recent release of Rush Live in Rio - DVD.
As a big fan of this group and all the tech stuff behind their production, I also went after my DVD copy. It was released in the USA before arriving Brazil.
Several times we almost cried watching that very nice performance on screen, entirely recorded in Brazil and seeing that they wanted to come to FLorianópolis ( the island where I live )because they found it beautiful!
However, we were completely disappointed with the sound quality of this DVD.
Show of hands sounds 100x better and it was done in 1989, maybe?
Although Geddy's bass sounds as never before, the mix balance sounds like an amateur mix.
Sometimes the vocals are buried in the middle of the mix, too much low end/reverb on guitars.
The keyboards sometimes sound like a plastic $50 toy kid.
The mastering side... You can feel pumping all the time.
We know they had some serious technical problems: in one show their pm1D stopped functioning for a few seconds, some midi gear lost memory, lots of delay and so.
Has anyone else noticed this? I have listened both in stereo and dolby.
I am still listening in other monitoring systems just to confirm what a few guys ( including me) have also reported.

Yeah. I listened to it in stereo when i got home, and sometimes the low end would overpower everything else. It was a pretty horrible mix (IMHO) but I watched the whole thing cause Neil Peart Rules. His solo was jaw dropping.
Haven't had the chance to listen to it in surround yet. I will some day.
Is it possible they had to use some of the PA sound also? I have
Is it possible they had to use some of the PA sound also? I have seen on live productiosn the mix engineer using some of the low end coming from the PA!!!!
I thought my ears were fooling me. It is a pity.
But at least Geddy´s bass is incredible!

I am happy I did not buy it in NY. I have just watched my assistant´s copy.
So, seems everyone has similar opinions about it. Vocals quite buried indeed.

I haven't heard it yet. I am a big Rush fan. They are showing it in a theatre near me. I plan on seeing it. I have a copy on it's way to me. I will let you know what I think. Most Rush material is of a very good quality so I would be surprised if it's bad.
I have not seen it yet. Maybe I will rent it just to see how bad
I have not seen it yet. Maybe I will rent it just to see how bad it may be.
I too am disappointed if this is the case. I cut vinyl lacquers & made CD masters for a couple of their albums in 1988-1991 & always respected the audio quality.
sure. Those guys rules.

I must dissagree the digital 5.1 mix at max in a great room and you are right in the middle of the show. Yea the mix has a few holes here and there, but its a real live performance in front of 60000 people. A real band doing a real show no bs fixes or digital manipulation.
