I have a VERY humble recording apparatus at my disposal, namely: Dell 333 PII, Turtle Beach Montego soundcard, Cool edit pro, Cakewalk Pro 8, Windows 98 OS. Could I benefit from a plugin , especially a freeware program, that will allow me to better control the ability to further improve the sound of my mixes/demos? I know it's out there. I tried to get 2 free pluginsto work, namely these: (Dead Link Removed)
AND:

hey lee,
megatone it's a free vst plugin that i made with
the synthedit by jeff mcclintock.
it's a modular architecture that allows to save your creations as vst devices.
i tested it only in cubase vst32 and sx, and it works pretty good, with a very low cpu consumption.
it's a multiband compressor basically.
the fact that it is just a link is because i don't have any webpage, and i am a professional musician and composer, not pro developer, and at the moment i'm not doing any business of myplug-ins

so it's a safe thing, and also it has just to be copied (the two files)in the vst plugins folder of the host app., and then you find it as an effect inside the app.,without any registry modification or key-protection.
it's vst and not directx, so your host app. must be vst compatibile.
if you don't like it, you can just delete the two files, and everything is like before...

here you can find some opinions, and also very useful info's, as it is one of the most important plug-in dedicated sites:
