hi all. i'm getting close to spending a bit of dough on a nice pair of monitors that i hope i'll be proud to own for the rest of my life. my research so far has led me to believe that a pair of either atc scm 20asl (thanks sanity inn for your help on that) or something in a similar size and price by pmc would do the trick. i'm just wondering if anyone has any strong opinions on either brand, or if anyone feels that these kind of monitors are overpriced.

hey jimbo,,

i did some reading on the PCM aml-1 nice look , about same size as the ATC scm 20 pro,,, 27K to 35hz response ,nice spec,,

i never knew about them, then again, I never knew about ATC until i bought them too,, would like to give them a listen side by side...

anyway, my turn to thank you jimbo, cause thru my checking these out, i picked up the Bryston line to deal :)

as someone mentioned, you're comparing apples to apples now, it will come down to what one you like listening to I think,,, hope you can

my 2 bits

The AML-1's are not really 'nearfields' per se, they need a decent room to operate in. IMO to dial in the low end these speakers need to be off the back wall at least 1/2 meter, and the bass 'sweet spot' is about 10ft in front of the monitors.

One also needs to work with the LF trim on the speakers to adjust for the room as well. It was about a week or two of moving them around and tweaking the trim before I had what I was looking for (in terms of reproduceable mixes) but man once I had it... I now fully trust these speakers and have had great results with translation. I have a pair of auratones just to compare once in a while and often the bass needs little or no tweaking to translate.

good luck man
