Going to be building my first studio and I would like to know what you all think about the products I'm going to go with. The goal is to have a good studio without having to spend tons of money on Pro-Tools.

I just want to get an opinion from you guys if there's something on my list that I could get better for cheaper.

Dual Opteron 244s DAW loaded with Cubase SX3

$1700 - MOTU 192HD PCI Interface (12 ins, 12 outs)
$1300 - Mackie ONYX 1640 Mixing Board (will serve as the mic preamps for the MOTU interface)
$480 - Roland TD6 V-Club Sound Module
$280 - D-Drum Triggers, set of 5
$300 - Marshall Electronics MXLV69M 25mm gold diaphragm condenser mic
$330 - Three pack of Sennheiser drum mics, the 604 pack I think
$140 - Shure Beta 57
$600 - 2x Audio-Technica AT4040 condenser mics
$350 - Fostex PM1 Studio Monitors

We were originally looking at the C1, but the Marshall sounds really really nice. Maybe we'll get a C1 and compare or something?

I think the eventual goal is to get Avalon pres for vocals, but we needed a mic pre with a lot of inputs mainly for drums, so that's why we're getting the Mackie Onyx. But yeah, the Onyx is mainly for drums because the 192HD needs a pre.

If you haven't heard the Fostex PM1s, you should really take a listen, they are unlike any other Fostex model. My writer/producer and I really liked the sound / mix / presence of the PM1s.

Thanks for the input guys!!!

I think I would replace the mxl mic with something like a Shure KSM-27, which is going to be a bit more versatile. Good pick on the 4040's.

I agree that you'll want some better pre's eventually. Also, make sure that your monitors don't just sound good but that they translate well and will allow you to do a good and accurate job mixing.

of course better pres are always better but the mackie is not a bad option- you can always use a mixer either in the studio or live and they will be still good for extra pres down the line when you can afford your avalons- unless you are planning on spending a fortune for 16 channels! :D

edit, scratch that. I wasn't familiar with the MOTU unit you're planning on buying, but I looked it up, and it's pretty sweet.

Yeah I'm definitely not cheaping out on the interface and I am NOT EVER going firewire. It's PCI or die for me :P
