There are a handful of free RTAS plugs, but that handful is missing a few fingers.
The fxpansion adapter is the cheapest way to go with all the free vst's out there. Weeding through them to find some of any quality can be a real pain...but a few exist.
If you said specifically what you were looking for, it might be easier to point you in the right direction.
grab the free plugs from digi site, the bomb factory 1176 is nice to start, and its free. if you have the latest version of PT you can run there Eq 3, its all right. buy the adapter and find some vsts there are ok ones out there, or go buy some rack gear and externally process stuff
Actually I believe eq3 is free to anyone with 6.4 or higher, I downloaded it a couple months ago for free and I'm still working on 6.4. IMO its a great plug, sounds better than waves eq, but thats just my opinion.
I think Nomad Factory might have some decent free RTAS chorus type fx and some compressors...not sure though.
For a decent verb you're gonna have to pay up...I'm not aware of any decent free one's out there that'll be very usable with pro tools. SIR through the wrapper would be good IF it didn't have such obscene latency. There are a number of free vst verbs, but you may need several to get the job done as I've yet to come across any that are very versatile...that doesn't mean they don't exist, just that I haven't ever found any.
