Hi I am just starting out and need some advice. I am about to record a CD for a band. The band plays pop/rock and I am just starting into recording. I want a really good sound, thats really important! I was woundering what equitment you would recommend? Money is no issue to a certain extent.

I was thinking of a Neumann u87, is that a good mic?
If anythings better let me know

This is the third time you've posted this topic and your other thread already has several answers. If you have $3000-4000 to spend on a mic, go ahead and do it. It's your money. "Best" soundcard? Go get yourself a ProTools HD3 setup. Add a control surface with preamps(a la icon) and or a couple of 96 I/Os and preamps it shouldn't run you more than $80 Gs.

You will NOT give this band a really good sound. You have neither the equipment nor the knowledge to do a proper job.

Since money is not an issue and "really good sound" is what's important, my advice is to take the money that you would spend on a feeble attempt to put together a recording studio with your one u87 and buy some studio time at an established recording studio and have an experienced engineer record the band.

That is of course unless the band doesn't want this CD immediately. If they are willing to wait a year or so, you should be able to aquire the equipement and know-how to operate it well enough to produce a decent sounding CD for the band.

DUDE....the difference is that when I didn't know shit, I researched. You are just asking questions about things that you don't even have the first clue about.

Sure, your response to that is probably, "I said I was just starting out, so how to you expect me to have a clue".

To which I would respond "HeeHaw...search the internet...search the forums here. Fucking go to the Pro-Tools fucking website and find out what the differences are between fucking 1 fucking 2 and fucking 3. "

And to answer your question...BECAUSE ITS 3 AND EVERYONE KNOWS THAT 3 IS BETTER THAN 2 OR 1.

You know free fall, there is a group of people who love to deal with people who have enough money to buy top of the line equipment but don't have enough energy to ask a detailed question on a website where information is free. These people are called salesmen. (Or they were before gender specific names were taboo.) They will be happy to spend time with you and tell you what to buy so that you have "the best of the best." If you're looking for "equitment" you should look somewhere else.

IF YOU HAVE TO ASK IF A U87 IS A GOOD MIC THEN YOU ARE NOT READY FOR ONE.

I KNOW this is a troll but I feel obligated to answer for those who ARENT trolls and really want to know.

There is NO amount of money you can throw at a recording project to give it "really good sound" without the knowledge and experience necessary to get it right from the beginning.

Yeah, you're right when you say that we have all been beginners somewhere along the way. When I was a beginner, there wasnt ANY digital anything.....NO ONE would have let me within three feet of the recorder....four feet of the console......and the only part of 'micing' I would be allowed to handle was the plugging in of the cables and wrapping the excess neatly around the base of the mic stand.......If I inadvertantly MOVED a mic from its placement while plugging it in, I was to inform the engineer of this and then I was to go home for the day until I was able to plug a mic in without MOVING it from "ITS FUCKING POSITION I SET IT AT>>>>DUMBASS!!!!!!!!...."

There's all kinds of things that are better... and worse. A 57 on a snare is better. A Beta52 on vox is worse.

If you're really thinkin' about doing this... you're in for a rude awakening.

Being fresh meat and thinkin' that someone's gonna be able to just up and give you a $10,000 gear list that you can go buy... and then viola' you open a successful recording business... you're out of your mind.

If your in some class that gives you a $10k budget and you want someone else to do your homework... kiss my ass. Go do your own work.

There is no way that you can buy your way to good recording without any experience is about as laughable in this day and age as finding a rich, honest politician... ain't gonna happen junior.

Let me say that it will be a very long time before I can make a good recording.

Exactly the point the rest of us here are trying to make... Sorta.
Another point is that the OP appears to be a troll...

Regardless, no matter how long you're in this game, you gotta remember two things.

1) You'll never make great recordings 100% of the time - far too many variables.

2) You must have a sense of humor - without one this industry will drive you absolutely insane.
