I'm putting together a useful, but inexpesive, drum mic set up, I have a SM57, a Beta 52, and I am wondering if getting a matched pair of the HM-1s would be appropriate.
If you know of anything else that would go well as an OH, and double as a useful vocal mic that would be the cream.
As I see it those four mics would hold me down pretty well, for now. Granted its not ideal, but hey I'm in college and broke and less than 250 american for two HM-1s sound like a killer deal to round out my collection. But if anyone has had experiance with the KELs as OH and didn't like them or thought that mic X would have been a better choice let me know.

But I cannot stress enough how insanely awesome an overhead I think the HM-1 is. It is BY FAR the best overhead I have ever experienced - eating every other mic in existence for breakfast. This includes DPAs (B&K), Schoeps', C414 - you name it, it's not worthy to be discussed on the same forum as the HM-1.
That's MY opinion and there's nothing anyone can do about it! :lol:

Can't believe I almost missed an opportunity to flaunt my latest creation - a small piece of metal I did to test my new drumkit.
HM-1s featured as overheads and ambience (not that the ambience is used all that much - the room was not very exciting which I new beforehand). The room on snare and toms is artificial.
Much of the snaresound comes from the overheads, which is part of what I love about the HM-1. I picks up the entire kit really nice, apart from flattering the cymbals.

I purchased 2 Oktava 012 mics from GC for $100.00. I got these for my lo-end projects and to save my hi-end mics for hi-end projects. Recording magazine had an article to hop up the 012. I did the modifications and now they are my favorite overhead mics.
