If you run it direct it sounds like crap. If you run it through an amp it sounds alright.

Depends what sound you want!

It sounds great direct for a U2 type sound or a Queen type lead.

If you're after Linkin Park or Smashing Pumpkins, you need a room full of amps....

Yeah, It doesn't sound that bad direct for clean tones. But for distortion it sounds awful direct.

Heres a song I recorded where all the guitars were done with a POD XT.

The clean tone in the begining was recorded direct. The distorted parts are the pod being run through an amp miked by an sm57.

Sounds alright.

I use the PodPro (not the xt) for direct recording all the time and have never had a problem with dirty sounds. I usually use the S/PDIF out either into a Korg D1x00 or (currently) a MOTU 828 mk II / RME Digi96/8Pad card/

The sound has been just great.

I have an xt turning up on Monday and cant wait to get my grubby little mitts on it.

I have a bunch of friends who use the xt via USB and the first thing they told me, relative to the v2 was to back off on the channel volume

i have heard some really great dirty sounds done with podxt so persevere and Im sure you will get their.

Id gladly spend the $$$$$$$ for the pro,if I was convenced that the tone sounded ,at least close to a real amp turned up to 11.
From waht Ive heard,Line 6 offers some pretty intersting products.
If you could-------------------------------explain to me as to the tone of the distortion of the Pod Pro-is it a Marshall-----Fender____-Boogie?tone?

Please don't think I'm being belligerent but, rather have me banging on about how great this is, which is at the best subjective, you could pick up a second hand pod v2 for about 100 bucks have a go your self.

Re. Podv2 vs Podxt: From what I have gathered the presets are nicer on the v2 than the xt. However the xt is much more tweekable. I think the tweak-ability of the xt bamboozles some (not everyone).

Re. Pod vs mic: if you are aren't a seasoned pro with a big old mic locker, a nice sounding room, no neighbors, a bunch of nice pres / compressors etc etc and a degree in mic positioning, relative to micking a cab the pods are much easier to work with.

I like to use either an SM57 or an AKG C414 into a Focusrite Pvmp (MOTU 828 mk ii) on my TSL100 and can get some reasonable sounds in my little room at relatively quite volumes. However it is much easier to use the pod set to 5B (Soldano X88 emulation) and just wale away !! It is a little different (less responsive) than an amp however I don't know that that is necessarily a bad thing.

I've had the pod guitar and bass xt pro's for some time now and, when I record them direct their absolutly CRUSHING!!! I've been contemplating selling my triple recto stack! never thought I'd do that! I play mostly "PANTERA" style riffs. through my jackson pro ax fitted with a "DIMEBUCKER" and a "SCREAMIN DEAMON".....everyone who hears it refuses to believe it's a direct recording..... I'm sold! hook, line and sinker!....

I had a POD, and then recently picked up the PODxt.

Between the two, both have patches that one does better than the other. The XT definitely cleans house for clean amps, and if you download the "Metal" package, it's got some better distortion tones.

IMHO it's not going to fool anyone on it's own direct, but mixed in with a song it sounds great. My new thing though is to run the Bogner Uberschall model through my Fender Hot Rod DeVille, and it sounds gorgeous, especially if I take the drive down a notch on the POD and give it a little crunch in the amp. I think the two sound good together.

If someone has a great amp, I'll record that, but lately I've been working with a band that has these horrid sounding Crate half-stacks, and the POD is heads and tails above them in every respect.

I've also heard that plugging the POD into a great DI (like the U5) yields even better results.
