Ok, first let me fill you in,

I run

Guitar > Effects > Line 6 amp > Direct Out > Soundblaster 24bit Soundcard

I finally got it setup so that I can record through my amp, use my effects and not get fuzz or noise. Though to hear myself play I can only hear through my computer speakers now(which are not bad speakers, but they are not good either) and i can't really hear myself that well, especially when I use reverb, delay, chorus etc..effects. (cant hear the "effect of the effect" barely at all)

Problem 1:
While playing back my tracks, and while playiing a new track over existing tracks I can only hear myself out of one speaker and the subwoofer. I am recording stereo, i think. The adapter i use to go from 1/4in to 1/8in(into soundcard) is stereo. So I dont know what the problem is.

Question 1:
Are monitors or maybe a good set of headphones the solution to my problem?(not so much the "stereo" problem but the playback, and not hearing myself while playing problem.)
Can I hook up "monitors" like I do my computer speakers, and if so, can I listen to CD's and stuff like I usually do through my computer speakers, through these monitors?

If this is the solution to my problem, could you recommend some good monitors, and or headphones in the $150- $300 range, (or what I need to spend)

I really appreciate all the help I have gotten so far.
Thanks in advance.

sounds like your cable is wired mono at one end and wired to a single channel of stereo at the other - or you are using a stereo plug in the mono Direct Out socket of the Line6. Get a mono plug wired to both channels of stereo to sum to mono, or set the track in your software to mono.

Unless you can confirm the Line6 has a stereo d.o., I would doubt it is sending a stereo signal.

Good monitors will always help you have a better recording experience, but why do you not use the Line6 to monitor with zero latency and just use the computer speakers for playback?

When I plug my guitar cable into the DO of the L6, it mutes all
noise coming from the amp speakers. I will assume that this feature is for playing into headphones.

But I have that plug coming out of my DO, into a "stereo" so they say, adapter to go into my soundcard.

I dont undestand this?
I dont know what latency is, but im going to go look it up.

OK, if it mutes, not much you can do about it.

there may be an engineers code that will change this, check the Line6 forums.

if it worked like that, you could listen to the line6 while you played, rather than be subject to the time delay for the sound to be converted from analog to digital and back again before it reaches the computer speakers.

then your speakers would become playback tools only.

you need to look at that cable carefully. the tip should be wired to the tip and ring of the stereo plugs, sleeves wired together.

look up tip, ring, sleeve, latency etc. where you think fit - this will all be useful learnin'
