I recently upgraded to SONAR 3 which includes a plugin that allows you to spacially "place" instruments. I haven't had much of a chance to play with it but the intital results were just ok. While it moved things nicely through the stereo spectrum (even on a cyclical basis that you can adjust) and placed them fairly accurately in the front centre, any "depth" ie rear-channel action was quite limited. The "surround" information was supposedly imbedded in the stereo signal. Something like ProLogic I guess.
What I was wondering if there are means of recording in true 5.1 surround? Obviously there must be given the proliferation of 5.1 surround DVD's. But is it in the grasp of the home recordist yet?
Why the heck would I want such a thing? Well, just because it would be really, really cool!

I might be totally wrong, but I think you have to have the complete surround monitor setup to really appreciate what's going on spatially with it. On a vaguely similar note, years ago at audio school we messed around with an AKG C24 coincident capsule stereo mic, and you could actually get a sense of front and back, also up or down, out of a stereo monitor pair. Weird, but nice :)

For "true" surround sound recording, try a Soundfield Mark V, allows you to recording in 3D, and sounds awesome. All you need is a spare 5 grand knocking around....
