I'm looking to purchase a bass drum mic in the very near future. I've been considering the Shure PG52 since I can get one new for $85 and was wondering how it compares to the mics that are about $100 more such as Beta 52, D112, 602, or anything else. I'm not looking for a professional recording, I just want something decent.

but if you have the money try getting the d112! it's way better and who knows if in the future you'd use it instead of trying to upgrade something you had bought earlier...
I've had both the PG52 and the Beta52. The beta is a much clean
I've had both the PG52 and the Beta52. The beta is a much cleaner and punchier sound and I love it. I also had an audix d6, but I thought it was garbage, way too much low-end 'flubieness' and not as tight as the beta52 or the pg52.
Its all up to taste, for me their is no other than the Beta52 and its well worth the extra $$.

I haven't been around in a while, but thanks, looks like I'll steer clear of the PG52. No sense in compromising when I can do so much better for a little under $200 total. Although for the time being, I've had great luck miking by kick with an old Shure BG2.1 that a friend have me for free since he hadn't used it in years.

If I was you I'd save up a little more and buy an Audix D6. They are fairly cheap on Ebay and one of the best kick mics around. They also work great on bass cabinets and hey, in a few years you won't be shelling out another couple hundred to upgrade your mic you don't like anymore.
Just my opinion. I have one and it's awesome! Anyone who thinks they are garbage must not know how to tune their drums, because it's the best I've ever heard my kick! I have used Sennheiser, Shure, AKG, Audix and some different PZM mics and the Audix is the best.
I don't think the Shure kick drum mics get much love around here, but do some research... maybe I'm wrong.

how can you definitively say 'this' mic is the way to go while admitting you haven't tried 'that' mic. if there's one thing to learn about recording it's that experimenting is key. if there's one thing to learn about discussing recording it's to not state your opinions as fact, as someone is bound to tear you a new one.

Just wanted to add that I owned a PG drum kit set a while back and using them was so disgusting it made me want to wash my hands while mixing. Sold them within a month.

D112 is not the mic for you if you want a good clean punchy soun
D112 is not the mic for you if you want a good clean punchy sound. The Beta 52 is nice, it has more of a tailored frequency response for rock and in general gives a good low & hi boost with a touch of a mid cut straight out of the box. The PG52 is acceptable though, it doesn't have a neodymium magnet, it's not supercardiod, and it's not as smooth... but. If you can tune the kick and know your placement it will get you results.
