Ok, so I am a Hip-Hop artist and I have been recording with other people for a while, and they know what they are doing. So I decided to give the recording thing a shot. I have Acid Pro 6 and I need to know how to keep the vocals and the beat at a decent (good sounding) volume level. I have just been adjusting the volumes trying to see what sounds good. Is there a way where i can set the vocals not to go past a certain volume, along with the beat? If so then how? Thanks for reading... :)

Yeah, sure, for you guys, I'd certainly recommend an outboard microphone preamp followed by a compressor/limiter. You'll record a more quickly usable and easy to listen to track. ProTools will play back with your processing all in real time whereas with our fun and Cool, Auditions, we got to Sir-render to enjoy playback.
Otherwise, I'd lower the record level, record at 24-bit/32-bit float. Then you can do more postprocessing if it's not overloaded to begin with. This all comes down to gain staging again. What gets turned up and where along the way. That's part of the art of audio engineering. You wouldn't play instruments if they weren't in tune. Good engineers make sure their equipment is in tune with the 'toon. Folks Do It All in the Box. Some Folks Do It outside the Box. Some Folks Use Both Methods. Whatever It Takes.

I found "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" by Bobby Owsinski to be a great read when I was getting started, and I still flip back to it today. It goes over all the basics of mixing.
