Hey,

I am in the mix stage of a great production(good song, great vibe, killer lyrics). The tracking was succesful in being sonically 'there'.I have some work ahead of me in carving out some breathing room for the track(trimming fat, creating ambience)to finish things.
I am wondering if putting this mix through a good half inch machine will help open the soundfeild up while warming the track just slightly. The song was recorded in pro tools LE(digi001 and pre sonus Digimax)and is being mixed in the same environment(all I have to work with but I can't complain).
My goal for this mix is to hear it on college radio.I want to see how much the radio stations compressors effect my mix(mixing style if you will).

All fine and small potatoes.

Something I did recently is bring my g4 and 001 to the mastering house. We hooked it up thru an apogee psx100 and mixed it down to half and inch and mastered from there. Doing this allowed a couple things....
being able to make a couple small changes on the mix before mixing down..... hearing it on some real accurate monitors in a great room helped clear some stuff up and clocking from the apogee helped the sound out as well. and mixing down to a nice half inch machine definetly doesnt suck either.

I've mixed a few albums over the last 12 months straight out of Pro Tools to 1/2" and I have to say that if you have the budget for tape , then go for it!

I agree with Bear and Planet about the 001 converters. Get a really good D/A Convertor when you mix down to 1/2" , and do the transfer at the mastering house.

if it's being mastered somwhere, don't max it out with L1, remember to capture a version with no plug ins on the Mix bus, they might prefer that.

I am trying to make simple mixes (just a compressor on the mix bus) then drag them later into mastering sessions..

Dificult, as I like my mix to be mastered sounding when I am doing it (not that that makes any gramatical sence)

Good point Jules, thanks. If we do get an outside job done ,I won't do any processing of the mix bus.Especially comp/limiting.

The main thing that I hope an outside house will do for me is open the sound feild to hear the space between the instruments a little more.there is not alot of od'ing but I just don't feel like I can hear the ambience enough.
