I heard that there is a difference between the HDD cables that my P4PE will accept. Someone eluded to the fact that to get the highest ATA, I'll need and 80pin? rather than the older style cable on my primary IDE channel, to be sure I'm not running at ATA/66 or the like.
I'm not sure how to tell if I'm using the correct cable. Can someone please advise me? Thank you.

i think if you have the time and/or inclination to experiment with IAA then do so.
there are indeed problems with IAA but ive never experienced them personally so i guess there are many factors involved which means nailing the exact cause of instability in some systems trickier. IAA has evolved over many different versions and as always with PC hardware the multititude of combinations from different vendors doesnt help in deciding if it will work for you.

Yes the ATA100 cables are 80 wire conductors on a 40 pin connector. The extra wires are for shielding and also give you UDMA 5 mode which is true ATA100/ATA133(although the difference between these two are moot)
IAA will cause you not to be able to disable Write caching or change the mode of the drive(CDROM or IDE).
I've done bench marks and found it to slow the system down more so than help it. It may be good for internet or general application based systems but not DAW machines
