Has anyone had a 2gig Jaz disc lockup. My drive is fine, its got to be the disc. I tried iomega support and they suck like a new vacuum cleaner. DO ANYONE KNOW HOW TO RESTORE THE DATA ON A BAD DISC. I have 20 songs that are perfect I'd hate to do (months)of all that work over. Thanks ROmembers

Thanks audiokid. Here is more detail, I've never used the drive on a computer. I've always had it hook up to my drum machine (AkaiMPC2000) via scsi port. But some reason the disc will not work, I'll insert it in the drive and it just makes a funny noise and sometimes get stuck and want come out of the drive. Its got me stuck. But thanks man, I'll be waiting on your reply.

okay, hopefully it has a scsi or find a friends pc with a scsi.
You will need to use norton diskdoctor or some other disk repair utilities.

I'm no pro on this but it happened to me and I fixed it in two minutes. The difference for me was I didn't have it happen on the MPC, but I think norton will fix it.

Jaz suck the big one but they are handy. They can jam easy if you double click them and they get confused. They then start to scramble and loose some of their directory info, be tree or what ever you call it.

Anyway, a disk utility should get it back. One thing though........check with Akai about using a utility for this, forget about iomega, they are no help to us.

One would hate to think that norton could change the MPC format so you need to be sure about that. The MPC is a PC format.

Good luck.

Oh lord, help this poor soul...

It's kind of an old issue, so it hasn't really been discussed on RO, but as audiokid said "Jaz suck[s] the big one". They are not reliable enough to risk keeping stuff, except as temporary storage, and when using something else as backup. In other words, don't put anything on it unless you don't mind losing it. High failure rate has been going on since the first 1GB cartriges rolled off the line. Iomega has never properly addressed (or acknowledged for that matter) the problem, so most of us in the audio community have abandoned Jaz as a viable storage format.

This has been common knowledge for quite some time. How long have you been using it?

Interestingly, the Zip format seems to be relatively stable and is widely used. It is especially good for MPC's, as you can store all the samples for one song on a single disk, and cheap enough to have 2 backups. Some people like to organize all their kick's on a single Zip, all their snares on another, etc. As you just found out, keeping everything on one 2GB cartridge is daaaaaaangerous. Zip is a good, economical way to split that up a bit.

Good luck with your data, I hope Norton works for you.

Angelo, good point. I use an MPC and use the zips. They have never let me down.

I have better luck with the jaz if I high level format them with HDT.
I force the HDT driver everytime I load a jaz as well, this seems to work. Rebuilding the jaz desktop is another ****ing thing I do.

IOMEGA, I hope someone reads this plea and does something!

I had iomega as an affiliate link on RO hoping to generate some extra money to help us upgrade but after this, I just dumped the company in the garbage.

No more support for iomega !,

I'm happy to have the drive but if they can't help us then **** em.

Here's another thing I just thought of.

When you bring the jaz up on the PC, do the fix with norton and then keep it on the PC. There's a good chance that the drive or disc is toast or definately needs to be reformated.

Go through all the steps before you give up.

They usually can come back by applying the tricks.

We need a PC guru here.

I'm a mac semi guru
