I've been travelling a lot lately and spending time in hotel rooms,
Having done some recording when possible,
portable
digi 02 rack into my mac.
Then doing a rough mix using 4 different
headphones ( all cheapos )swapping between passes. This works
to a point where I try and find a happy medium and resonable sound
across all 4 headphones. Then we have a quick listen on any system
that is around us at any time The results are of course variable and interesting ha ha,
Question:
Im thinking bout getting a nicer set of headphones to help and maybe
some really small monitors that would be operating mainly at a low level
because of the changing room dynamics and neighbours.
The monitors have to be small because of restrictions while in transit.
I'd like these hdphones/monitors as travelling companions over the next couple of years, where i can get to know their response and translate to
other systems more consistantly.
I couldnt justify spending more than 1k on either purchase,
any recomendations ?,

AKG K141's are both a good price and 'flat'... ish!
i recently bought a pair of sony MDR 7505's because the phones turn and store (physically) flat, and was told they are fairly 'flat' in the frequency realm also. they are great for travel and packing and hooking up to my XH-A1 for video monitoring, but i find the difference between them and the AKG's HUGE.
i think the sony's are more hyped... and are louder? weird... they are WAY louder than the AKGs at the same volume... i don't trust them... i don't trust anything... 'flat' is a myth, a myth i tell you! lies! everything is lying to me! what? i must bite off my fingers? who said that? ok. i will. what? no i can't eat them! no! what? taste like chicken? well ok. just this once...

I use the Yamaha MSP5s as a portable monitor - well under your budget but a decent monitor and useable. A fairly nice low end. I think they're about $500/pr.
I trust what I hear and have compared them to my real JBL monitors enough to know what not to do when listening strictly on the Yamahas.
I think they'd travel well. The only thing you may want to do is to create a removable AC plug, but that could be done w/o too much trouble in a few minutes as long as you shielded your connections. The only reason I say this is because I typically hall them in a crate and am always concerned about the connected wires. I plan to do what I am describing so the speakers travel better.
YMMV
