Can I hire your consultation?
I've been making records both mobile and at home in a "project" capacity with only Digi 001 & Focusrite Octo Pre, decent mics, plugs/mixing in the box. Simple, effective and sonically appealing...clients happy.
Riddle me this:
With a simplisitic "if it ain't broke don't fix it mentality" & all avail Digi 001 input ports considered (8 ADAT + 8 avail 001 inputs + 2 avail digital) What is my best option in what piece(s) of gear to buy get the most avail good sounding pre's and the most avail input count within the Digi 001 environment? I have been considering a digital Yamaha 16 channel mixer. What would you do?
Price & sound quality considered to utilize 001's 16x (18x w/spdf) avail inputs, describe the ideal sonic solution and If I go with it I'll send you $25

If you insist on keeping the Digi 001, then get an 8-channel ADAT-output pre-amp and a 2-channel S/PDIF-output pre-amp. While you are about it, you could go for a multi-channel pre-amp that has both ADAT output and a FireWire interface. In this way you can use it with the 001 and seamlessly migrate to FireWire-based audio capture, which opens up a whole new sonic world of non-PT software.
ADAT 8-chan pre-amps: Mackie Onyx 800R, Presonus Digimax
S/PDIF 2-chan pre-amps: API A2D. Neve 1073DPD, Audio & Design DMA2
ADAT/FireWire pre-amps: Mackie 1200F; RME FF800 (2 off)
Fee: $25

not sure about the answer, but curious as to why you are attached to the 001 when it limits the PT version and your OS and therefore your other software?
this may sound insignificant, but when i went to a 002 from the 001 to break free of those limits, the newer PT had...color!
it may not sound any better (then again, it may...) but being able to organize and quickly find tracks (drums: green, Bass: red, keyboards: errr *pink*) is much much better, and i wonder why it took so long for this feature to be implemented?
but of course, if the hammer works, why paint it... or change it.
(i guess this is not a $25 post...)
