as to the D6- I haven't used that one but I used to have another model (I think the d4?) and we used to get a great sound out of it, comparable to the d112- the D6 is suposed to be better-

The D6 is a bit more contemporary in it's sound. Not as much of that basketball hitting the sidewalk thing of the D112 but as much thump. It can be a bit hard to pull a lot of "tick" out of the D6.

The d6 is a great mic. I rarely use anything else. I sold my beta 52s after I got the D6s. I occasionally still use 421s if I want a different sound, but the D6 is the go to mic. I've never had any problem getting "tick" out of the D6. That is one reason I like it so well.

Hey, thanks to everyone - I think I'll pick the D6 up today and give it a shot. Maybe I'll hang onto the Beta 52 just to have if only for variety's sake. Since we record so much in terms of drums, sometimes a mic's sound can get old and a simple switch can freshen up your overall perspective on things.

I guess while I am at it, I am thinking I'd like to have some Sennheiser E604's around too. Last gig I played they sounded really punchy - kind of like a SM57 with more warmth and low-end.

Would everyone agree the Sennheiser E604's are a good choice for toms?

Re; 604's, they are easy to place on toms, due to their side address capsule.

Please consider keeping any mics you have when you make a new purchase. You will find that different kick drum mics work better on some kits and others work better on other kits. Just as with vocals, no one mic is a "do it all" piece. It's nice to have a choince when trying to dial in that perfect sound.. also kick drum mics like the D6, D112 and the Beta 52 can make an excellent choice for floor toms and bass cabs as well as other applications. One that really surprised me was how good a D112 sounds on Marshall guitar cabs and male voiceovers ...

I like the 604's, they are easy to use, less stand clutter around the kit with the clips, but sometimes you have to improvise depending on the width of rim on the drum (shim with cardboard for example). While you're at it, see if the dealer will let you try out an e602 on approval, to compare with the D6. I've been using one for three years now, phenomenal kick mic.
