The DMS 22 is a very good preamp, regardless of its price. In addition, it has three band eq (parametric mid) and a stereo summing bus, very nice features. I have one. It stands its own with much better pres (I also have two Pendulum Audio pres and a John Hardy), although it is not of that caliber.

I own two Rane: MLM42 and MLM82. Both use the Burr-Brown mic preamp IC and sound good to my ears.
I looked at the schematic for the DMS22 and did not see any part number for the preamp used in my models. However, the DMS22 seems to be an upscale version of my two units. I have more channels, but less EQ.
Rane equipment is pricey when new, but is both plentiful and inexpensive on eBay. Both of mine came from eBay and work perfectly.
