Hello to all. I'm curious to see if anyone owns an MPC and if so, do you use it (and how do you use it) as the main controller in a somewhat moderate midi setup? Currently I have my 4000 daisy chained for midisync'n sequences & samples. Thanks

Hey Dabmeister!

I never use the sequencers on the MPCs. I just use them as sample modules, especially the MPC3000. I do slave the MPC (and other) sequencers to Pro Tools or Digital Performer when a client brings in something pre-sequenced. Then all I am doing is commiting the sequenced tracks to audio.

I haven't used the MPC4000, most of my clients want that dirty, grungy sound from the MPC3000 or MPC60 outputs.

Are you doing rap & hip-hop? What is it about these guys that they are just as conservative as a hard-core Republican when it comes to snare sounds and mixes? Just trying some fun panning and maybe some FX on things drives them crazy! And yet of all of the tracks I have mixed and/or produced the alternate mixes I did were the ones that were signed, yet they still insist on the same old sound! OH WELL!

Peace,

Uncle Bob

Thanks for the reply Bob. I have'nt taken the time to really get to know this thing, but what you've said so far as the snare sounds are concerned is very imformative. I do have a friend that will only sample drum sounds from different sources rather than use sample libraries. His music sounds very good. Especially the kind of drive he gets from the "drums". My style of music varies from R&B, Hip-hop to Acid jazz & some Classical. I use a Roland R-8 if I want some "dirt" added to the mix. It does'nt sound as good as the MPC4000 but it gets the job done. The controller issue is not priority. I've read a few articles about producers that solely rely on this, but I think since I'm a keyboardist that I'll stick to the keys for controlling things.
