I've been doing a shootout with Uad's newer preamp modeling plugins just using the preamp stage of their plugins set to Mic. It's pretty cool. There's something about them that is not a normal plugin in my opinion.
I've level matched bypassed vs active to the same decimal point peak level wise on say an OH L say there's a difference of 15 db added with the extra mic input/saturation effect. When I copy the plugin to the OH R I expected the 15 db difference to be the same. Different peak levels but the same difference between bypassed and active. They weren't... Also if I went to a different part of the track and checked the active vs passive difference levels they were different as well. not by alot,.. but I would have though the levels would be the same.
Also after I rendered each of them each one was a bit different level wise. I level matched a loop section, Oddly enough another section of the track would be different levels.
I guess Uad has modeled random differences in saturation/harmonics and how they react level wise in their preamp sections.

I guess out of all of them, I like the 1073 example the best, followed closely by the 88rs... But they all sounded good.
I also liked the API - not necessarily because I thought it sounded the best of the bunch on those particular tracks, but because I think they've gotten pretty darn close to the mid range that API is somewhat known for.

If I had to pick I'd say the 88rs sounds "best" to me in this case. Sounds like there's some multi band compression and maybe some maximizing / enhancing harmonically in the upper and lower ranges? I'm wondering if that's partly how the modeling sounds are achieved.
I honestly preferred the raw tracks to all but the 88rs over here on the couch. So it seems care must be taken in pre selection modeled or hardware.
