Greetings Opus200,
Firstly, let me tell you how much you amaze me time and time again! I followed your XP Tweak Guide quite carefully the other night and proceded to change a number of things. My problem is this, for some reason my CPU Usage keeps shooting up and down (also indicated by the Windows Task Manager). For example, I surfed the net this evening while playing a .wav file in WinAmp. The track kept on making popping noises and the track skipped quite a bit any time I opened a new link, or scrolled down a web page. It was essentially coresponding to the CPU usgage % shooting up and down rapidly on the Task Manager. I have a feeling that I may have tweaked something the wrong way somewhere along the line and now my system (ram 512MB) can't handle simple tasks as easily. Am I way off base here? I have a P3 900MHz, it runs pretty bare bones except my audio software, the internet and a bunch of crap attatched to it!
If you have any ideas, I would be greatful...
Regards,
mIchAEl
P.S. I also just got a...
"DAE ERROR - 9060 was encouter" while working in Pro Tools LE (Mbox), for the first time.
Any relation?

Opus your guide to XP services in tweak guide are great! I had to do it by trial and error before and ended up having to boot in recovery console and fix my registry.

In addition to the uncritical services listed in your guide, I was able to turn off these services as well (with no aparent ill effects):
IMAPI CD burning
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Management Driver
Workstation

Hey Opus,
I've had a couple of issues logging into some sites lately and wanted to know if there was anything in the registry that I may have turned off that stops me from allowing cookies to be placed on my computer. I went into "internet options" and combed through everything to an extent that I am confident that everything is in order there. I know that your guide specificly says that you used the guide for your computer that does not access the net so, is there a chance that I've done something that matters to me that may not have mattered to you on your non access computer?
Regards,
mIchAEl
P.S. I am posting this from another computer as I am having problems logging into even this forum from my own now.

It might have to do with the crypotollogy service that opus suggested that you disable.

If you are using the computer to surf the internet or do other things than just record I would be very weary of turning off services.

I can't think of any reason why the registry entry changes would have any effect.

From the XP tweak guide:
"DHCP Client Disabled (IA)
DNS Client Disabled (IA)
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service Disabled (IA)"
IA=Internet access

If you need interntet access these services have to be on. This is how I do it:
DHCP Client Manual. I turn this one on to get an IP address from the router and back off when I'm done with the Internet.
DNS Client Automatic
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service Automatic
If you want you can leave them disabled but turn them on when you need access.
