Beat Detective examines the sharp transients, such as kick drum. It then does some fancy fade/positioning and aligns it directly on the click beat.
It is a timing correction tool for sloppy drummers. My daughter's drummer is awfully close in her timing, but BD put her kick dead-on with the click. It is remarkable how much this tightens up the final sound.
Crud. I've been doing that manually all this time. I still leave some breathing space so it doesn't sound totally mechanical, especially on double hits, but that sounds a lot more convenient. Maybe too much so. ;)

Drumagog is brilliant plugin for triggering, but doesn't help with timing. Regrettably, I think beat detective's got that market to itself.
I do it manually. Sounds better, I tell myself . . .
I suppose you COULD bounce out to midi from drumagog, quantize, then resample. That doesn't really count though, since you aren't going to be using the original tracks. And it doesn't do anything for bleed through overheads, etc.

bgavin, I have Sonar 3.0 and I'm aware of a function that will time correct parts to fit to a drum loop. Is that what Beat Detective does?

Kinda like AutoTune, for kick drums.

When I'm only the gear lumper, I keep a respectful distance from the engineer during sessions. This includes keeping quiet.
