I'm afraid there’s no clear answer like -set like that and forget. It's wide field. Sounds like cliche or bs but it's true. It depends of many things: guitar, players right hand technique, type of compressor (very important, because all are different and react differently), dynamic range, pattern you play, tempo, etc. If I give you straight answer about settings it could be totally wrong for your style/song or too wide to set.
i.e.
ratio: 3:1 to 8:1
attack: 8- 50 ms
release: 150 – 300 ms
treshold 6-8 dB
make up gain to compensate
See? Moreover the secret is in fine tuning .....
There are few really good posts in this forum about compressor in general, I mean really, really good. Search, read, learn and – practice. Fingers and ears. Understanding how compressor works will make you feel like home. For the rest of your life. Believe me. 8-)

I will get me a decent compressor and play around until I am happy. what can you get on a $500-$600 budget? Also, can I get a good floor compression stomp for live situations?

It would be nice if somebody who is more bass-boy than me jump here with suggestions.
