it's a bit unclear from the Crane Song website, so i'm curious if the currently shipping unit has:
a) 96k capability for all dig. outputs...and
b) the headphone jack?
. and if not... as a guestimate, could one expect them before, say, xmas?
considering the combined costs of what 8 ch.'s of really high-end mic preamps + 8 ch.'s of really high-endA/D can be (that already does 96..though i suspect that'll change really soon), more and more this unit seems like a pretty good deal.
thanx...

Yep.

Huh? 96k capability from a headphone jack?

If one had the money, and got into line around now, yeah, you could probably expect one before November (the line is kinda long).

Especially when you add in the "two bus" so it's actually 10 channels of seriously high end A/D.

I believe the headphone jack was an afterthought and included but not shown on the web page. It's obviously not 96khz (two different questions I think).
I also think the two-bus gets assigned to channels 7&8. I don't think it's two 'extra' channels of conversion. (unless it has it's own AES outs in addition)
I've been following this quite closely, as you might have guessed. :D

And probably around AES time, the "2-bus" outputs should also be able to carry 'adat compatable lightpipe' signals, for use with something like a 'Digi design adat bridge', like it could make Pro-sTools sound like music

my main dilemma is this...sure it's overkill to have 8 ch.'s of top end pres and A/D when all i'll be using the xtra 6 ch.'s for, almost always, is drums. but when one adds up the cost of a great 2ch pre (say Flamingo) with a great 2ch A/D (say Hedd), your basically at the cost of the friggin Spider anyways, and depending on your choices (i.e good used deals) you may not have 96k capability...which may not mean much of course. the main thing that's still missing is D/A...certainly a consideration...but maybe add in $750 for the 2ch Lucid and there you go. i mean if the thing sounds ridiculous thru MOTU D/A, then keeeriest...
and then there's the fact that i could sell some of the stuff i have now also, 'cause sure as shit i wouldn't use it anymore.
i'm figuring another response or 2 and i'll talk myself into it

I'm nearly convinced. Eight channels of top flight preamps going into limiter-protected A/D converters in a 4RU format...tough to beat as part of a mobile rig. I believe one is in my future. But I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get lots of 96/24 channels into a host-based DAW for tracking.

Yep, that's about it.

It seems they wants an spider too...
Ya know, I've always wanted to watch them treat 'Wonder Woman' like a farm animal...

Of course Im SURE noone is suggesting to ditch all your other mic pre's ...errr RIGHT???
So heres my question. Is there a facility for bypassing the mic pre's yet strill having access to the A/D?
And is there some sort of insert point to stick things into the mix A/D ?

Yes.
Every channel has line level ins as well as inserts.

WOW! This would be very cool! I can't wait to hear how people are making out with the Spider...very dramatic!
