Great, thanks for the info. Matter of fact, I'm typing this on an aging DAW I bought from ADK back in 2002 (I think), an AMD XP1800 which has seen a few upgrades, memory and storage mostly, but still runs quite well. I've got another question for you (or anyone else). Quite a few of the laptops in my price range in Bangkok are sold with a Linux OS, and while I'm a fan of Linux I'll obviously need Win XP to run my music apps. Generally speaking, is it disadvantageous to switch OSes on an off-the-shelf laptop? I'm thinking along the lines of proprietary software (heat/cpu/battery control) and component compatibility. Please give me your thoughts on the matter.

Actually it's a desktop in a rackmount case, although that's neither here nor there :)

For what reasons, other than I need XP and a clean install will remove any useless OEM preinstalled software?
I have no particular concern about voiding the warranty or anything, I just want to make sure to avoid any performance hitches due to incompatibility, or not-full-compatibility for that matter.

Sorry if I'm flogging a dead horse, but communication can be a problem here in Bangkok, and the salesmen at most computer shops know far less than I do about their products, so I like to know what I'm going for before I set foot in the store.

Last question, I promise: in your opinion, which out of the following companies have the best rep in the audio laptop market; Toshiba, IBM, Sony, Acer, or Asus? If I had 2k to spend I'd buy custom and have it shipped, but I don't so I can't.
