Here is an interesting situation. For the past few weeks I had been looking at an Avatar 2x12 with one Vintage 30 and one G12T-75. This would come out to about $450-475 with shipping. Last night a friend said he is letting go of his 5150 4x12 because he is getting a new cab. The 5150 has Sheffield speakers and according to him it is better than the Avatar for heavier stuff. Here's the clincher, he'll let me have it for $300.

What are your thoughts on the situation?

IMHO, I would take the 5150. If it's anything like the 6505 (40 year anniversary reissue of the 5150 gear) cabs you will like them a lot.

I'm not dogging Avatar cabs at all, they are for sure the epitome of bang for buck; but the Peavey cab's low end is so good. Plus, you already know what it sounds like and with the Avatar you'll be getting brand new Celestions with less break in time on them.

If it were my money, I'd buy the used cab off the buddy and spend the extra $$ on some pedals.

My $0.02,
Ben

Thanks for the advice all. I guess I should update you on what's happening now. He sold the 5150 4x12 to a close friend, so damn, but I understand, friend's come first. I am trying to find the funds for a Mesa Oversized Recto 4x12 with 4 vintage 30's. Yeah, I know, huge about face right? Well the way I see it is spending $1000 now is saving myself $2000 in the future. Plus it'll last me practically my entire career without becoming outdated or inferior or in need of an upgrade in a few months/years.
