Large diaphram mic? The M149 is my current favorite. I love it on vocals & ac. guitar.

I have a C3000 and AT 4033 and Rode NT 1 and the Rode requires much less EQ than either of the others. I suggest a strong look at the NT 1000 which is getting rave reviews. I also don't recommend a large diaphragm condenser on brass or woodwinds. I'm a sax player and I use either a Beyer M260 ribbon or a CAD CM 17. I think brass would be too brittle on a large diaphragm mic.

Alex, you might want to look into getting something like a Neumann TLM-103 from Europe (they're cheaper in Europe than in the US, they're made there). Try Link removed they seem to have some of the lowest prices in Europe that I've seen.

I think that the TLM-103 is a very good mic. However, I tend to match it up with a VMP-2 to smooth it out a bit. I like the way they sound together. Keep in mind I have a limited budget.

I like that combination too. Sometimes it sounds better plugged into the Dakings or the Telefunken V672's but 90% of the time the 103 to VMP-2 makes a great combination.

Over in Europe a TLM103 might be more affordable then you think. I don't see moving from a C3000 to a CAD E200 as an upgrade. It's a different sound, but it's not a better mic.

What exactly can you afford?

The E300 and the Rodent might sound a little better than the C3000 (arguably), but not enough to make clients beat down your door. Maybe a RE27 and sm-7 will give you more of a palate to work from, and you won't regret buying them 5 or 10 years down the line.
