The deal is that you get the core software for free and upgrade tone packs are purchasable from their custom shop using gear credits. Credits are sold in packs starting at about $20 for 20 credits. There are tone models for as low as 5 credits or $5.00.

Now that all being said, I think musicians have to take note of this concept. What a great way to lure in customers. Give them something that makes them want more. There are potential customers out there that maybe don't want all that is in the full retail version of Amplitube. Maybe there are a few tones that they want from certain packages. Now they can have them.

Why not employ a similar strategy with your music? Give out a sample and sell the rest of the tracks cheap. It doesn't matter that you're not making big bucks at first. You're trying to gain fans. Hook them in first and they will be willing to pay a premium for your quality product. Maybe even a CD or Vinyl if you're feeling ambitious.

I know there are already a few out there trying this. Radiohead for one. They gave away their album for donations. I don't think they got poor on that deal.
