To answer your question, Shure offers a very handy inline accessory- the A15As- it is an attenuator that will switch in up to 15dB of signal attenuation. It does this with no capacitance in the circuit, and it simply plugs in between the mic and the console, using a male XLR at one end of a small metal tube, and a female at the other end. I keep several in my tool box. You can plug a couple together to obtain higher values,too. I don't believe that it will work with phantom power...I've never needed it on a mic that did, but you might check with the Shure tech support to see. I usually use it with an SM57 on snare or an MD421 on kick with no problems...Good Luck!(PS: it is shown on their website in the "Problem Solvers" section of the microphone section)

thaks man i apprecite it. i got a421 today and used it will a 414 ona triplerectifier, i cant belive how good the 421 sounds. goes to show you why they have been around for so long. the only bad part is not enlgish owners manual. i was trying to find the roll off's
