I'm not that old (27), but damn things have changed!
Last weekend the motherboard on my DAW crashed after a power dropout, so I went and bought some new stuff (they don't make boards for my old CPU, so had to replaced CPU, memory, power supply...)
Yesterday night I assembled everything (love my new Antec case with removable HD rack!), turned it on, beep, everything works! Load WinXP's CD, in 30 minutes I'm up and running. No jumper to set, no configuration in the BIOS (except to active some features like Q-Fan). My 18 months old son could've done it. Man they take all the fun out of it!
The only actual "difficult" task was installing the fan/heatsink assembly without cracking the board (ended up taking the mobo out and installing the assembly "off case" although they advise against it...).
I remember having to periodically reconfigure the BIOS in my first computer and having to enter the number of clusters and such on my HD... times have changed!
Well at least, now pretty much anyone can build a DAW to his/her needs.

Antec SLK3000B, it comes with a PSU (so you choose which one you want). Bought at the local computer shop.

I love the case, I would've preferred a P180 (their ultimate case if you want silence)
