Does anyone here use external phantom power supplies?
I blew up the phantom power on my Apogee Mini-Me :evil: It was accidental but due to my own stupidity -I let a probe slip while measuring voltages in an AKG pattern box, and created a short that sent 120v into the mic input! It now crackles on one channel when phantom power is turned on. Having it fixed would cost as much as a phantom power supply, but I know many people prefer to use external supplies anyhow, for the same reasons that they don't like wall warts for preamps.
Just wondering what people think. I'm looking at the 4 mic AT power supply.

You should probably have your mini-me repaired. That dose of 120V a/c most likely zapped more than just the phantom supply. Even if your mini me is passing signal, those input components are probably not working at full performance any longer.

I don't suppose there's much point in discussing nice pre's and mics if they're passing through something that doesn't work right. I'm spending a lot on having my mics brought up to spec. so I suppose I should do the same with this.
Those preamps are going to take a little longer to acquire :(

I am rather pleased that the damage is minimal, and is relatively easy to fix. It's behaving as if a rather high voltage hit it, but not 120V. I find that odd, as the AKG schematic shows this as the control voltage for the mic pattern I was testing. Anyway, I'm delighted it has not been fried competely.

Since this is unoficially dead, I'll mention that I have an Apex
Since this is unoficially dead, I'll mention that I have an Apex APP 22. It comes in a sturdy box, has 2 channels of 48 volt phantom, and uses the kind of plug in the back of a computer instead of a wal wart. Seems to do the trick and only set me back $65 'dollars light,' (about 50 Yankee bucks)

I'm told the Audio technica 4 channel unit is also good but I couldn't get it to Canada in less than 5 weeksso I went this route.
