Give a sm57 a try...

I also heard some of the EV Mics as well as the Audix drum mic packages that sound really good.

The EV N/D468 is the current version. They were also the 308 then the 408. They all rock on toms, I like them way better than anything else. They're cool too because they are quite small and easy to position into tight spots.

I highly recommend them.

Give the Audix D2's a try, they are really wonderful. I don't care for the D1's, but I do like the D6. They also have a cheaper line (Fusion series I think???), which I would avoid.

Try the D2's...very surprising!

BTW, I also have a pair of MD421 which I love, but I also use the D2s a lot, depending on the kit.

I have used the Audio Technica Pro 35, clip on condensers on toms and snare for several years now and I have been very pleased with the results.. They sell for around $135 ea ... and are very convinent.

Another vote here for the Audix D-2s. They give a nice, full, punchy sound and don't take up a lot of space either. I've also been happy when sound guys put Sennheiser 604s on my drums for live sound. Am not familiar with how well they record, though. Those AKGs with the rotating ball thingy (sorry don't know the model number) have resulted in some really BIG tom sounds from my Yamaha Maple Custom Absolutes.

Check out the Audix D-Vice clips too...great for getting into tight places, and they are so dang versatile, you can place you mics anywhere...

the sennheiser 609 works great

The Sennheiser e604 clip on tom mics. Also work well on the bottom rim of floor tom as a kick beater mic. Three pack is about $300.

I heard this, apparantly it is supposed to be the same as the sennheiser 409 which Bob Rock used on the metallica "black" album.

SM58's work, like 57s, but in my opinion they get a rounder, more tom-like sound...

Try a shure beta 56. 8-)
