Hi all,
Working on a cover of "Over My Head" by King's X one of my favourite songs of all time. Here is what I have so far - still some work to do and a solo to add. Mix critique welcome before I continue:

I like the energy and the guitar sounds..
I'm not digging the swishy Hihat. Maybe it's soundcloud's conversion, but it seems unclear and missing attack. just like if we don't hear the impact but just the decay.. I'm sure you didn't use a gate with slow attack right ?
Anyway it is a pointless comment if it actually sounds like that without a mic..
The lead vocal is low mid heavy and missing high freq and presence to my taste..But hey I'm being picky... good job !

Hi Marco, this is Superior Drummer 3. Soundcloud does mess up especially hi hats, but I will try to work on this in the mix. Also agree after a few more listens that the vocals could do with a hi freq lift. Dug's and my voice both benefit from low mid emphasis but I think I went too far. Thanks for the feedback! Solos on the way and some vocal tracking to be completed - onto mix V2!

can you tell me about your DAW and mastering process.. I'm trying to reproduce the soundcloud bad convertion and I'm having problems, it sounds ok when I export my test project..
Hi there,
I use Reaper - its what I started on and these days all DAWs can do the same thing more or less. Mastering process - reaper has a folder type structure so you can make tracks parents or children. I use that to great effect. I have four main busses, MIX BUSS, SUBMIX, INSTRUMENT AND VOCAL. The MIXBUSS is only the loudness plugin and I find these days T Racks 5 works really well and the "One" module - all in one limiter. Sometimes I add the Stealth Limiter after it. I use a template and mix into a limiter. I pull up T Racks 5 "One" and always have it on and the have the mixbuss at -0.1 dB. The SUBMIX is all my mastering plugins except the limiter - varies, but I tend to use Slate VCC, VTM, Sausage Fattener, Ozone Exciter, and a few more - recently also added Pro-MB to this chain. This cool cause I can continuously see the VU meter for the SUBMIX and MIXBUSS channels side by side so I know that the gain staging is right. Other than that, my mix process is pretty much the same as used by Nolly Getgood - he gave a great lesson on Nail The Mix mixing a Periphery song live - I highly recommend signing up for Nail the Mix and getting the episode. It transformed my mixing workflow. Also, I master loud as hell. I don't care what people say about loudness wars being over - not true - loud is good. Other questions?
Thanks for sharing Jonathan ! I like the energy and the guitar
