I own a Soundcraft Ghost le24 which I use with an 8 track analog setup and I'm looking to upgrade to a 24 track hard disk but would like to know the following from a Soundcraft Ghost user like what's the deal do I have to ride the gain on the channel to +6 to get to +4dbu on my channel strip direct out? the rating on the ghost dir out is -2dbu.I thought this desk could be used with pro gear.the group outs are +4dbu.but I want hook my direct outs on all 24 channels to a Alesis HD 24xr.will a -2dbu input to the recorder make a difference when going to the Alesis hd24?or will I always have to juice the gain on the ghost and hope I don't clip?I'm ready to to purchase the Alesis hd24xr but I would like some input from someone using a ghost board. What do you do?

I record with a Ghost and an HD24....Thrust me, theres more than enough gain to get the Alesis' inputs to clip.Like John said ,its nice to have that headroom automatically provided. The better converters in the HD24xr will help even more. All of the rest of the outputs are +4 which is relatively important in running outboard gear. But the spec discrepancy on the outputs of the channels is to your advantage.

You probably need to establish what level at the direct out will cause a clip in the output section of the direct out.
this will tell you more than the straight spec of +4dbu of the groups and
-2dbu of the direct outs.
even so
having 6db of headroom at the hd24xr is not so bad.
The issue will be knowing when you have clipped the direct outs.
