Recapping an API input module

Hello,

I have an API input module that I want to recap. Any recommendations? I've heard the Black Gates are great.. What about the Nichicon Muse KZ? I dont know much about caps, so I appreciate any info or resources.

I know I cant get the exact values that are in there, does anyone have any general recommendations for choosing different values? If I put a higher value cap how might it change the sound? I assume using a higher voltage rating won't change the sound...

Thanks!

for power supplies stuff the larger value and higher voltage is normal

BUT

don't get carried away .... just go for the nearest closest fit. A modern cap will probably be of better quality andf be smaller physically. I like to use 105deg caps.

for the caps in the signal path, the type of cap should be retained and the values should be as near as possible.

If you do use high quality caps there may be a change in sound that you like .... or not.

Solen and other specialist audio brands can cost a great deal and it all comes down to personal preference.

... again be sure to find units that fit the PCB.

The API cards are very small and simple so I don't see much trouble finding replacements.

something like this ?

Just do the electrolitycs in the power supply first.

Kev,

I have a different module than that one. Its a 514L (which no one has actually heard of) It's 2520 based with the 2622 and 2157 transformers.

It has 5 electrolytics; 2 250uf @ 6v, 2 220uf @ 16v and a 1uf @ 50v in it currently. I was looking into the Black Gate caps.. I havent yet found a 250uf... so that was really my main concern about the values. I 'll just try the next closest value (470uf)...

I dont have the schematic, does anyone know what the original values are for the API input modules?

Im going to try out the Nichicon Muse as well... It is their "hi end audio" cap. Ive heard they are good, and at 1/10 the price of the black gates.

And I am indeed going to recap the power supply first.

Thanks!

err

yeah

I mean no

right ... I don't think I've seen that one refered to ??

have you checked Alexander's site ?

obviously in the API section

yep

that makes some sense

2157 output errr ..??

I think 2503 is the typical one

a picture of yours may help

a 250 to a 470 is a big change ... but I'd need to know where is sits in the circuit

does this feed the output trafo ?

?

but there is two of them ...

need to see the module
