just because the mic is in the video doesn't mean it's the same mic used when he recorded it

it could be a different mic, different pre, mixed differently, different studios, many things. the second song sounds more "compressed".

Most distinctly I think it's compression, EQ and delay/reverb.
Second one is definitely more compressed, and has more gain on the high frequencies. I believe it could also be achieved using a multi-band compressor on the vocal track.
The reverb is also set much higher, especially the diffused tail.

Ditto on both of the above posts... definitely compressed, boosted eq on the high end, delay/reverb.

one sounds live one sounds studio. if they did use a 58 they defiantly eq'd and compressed it heavily. doesn't sound like a 58 to me

Well it doesn't sound like a 58 because it's a Beta 58. He just lost the blue rubber band around the metal ball on that later video but it was still a Beta. And that Beta 58 sounds more like a condenser microphone and more like a Neumann 87 than a standard SM58 does.

I get that same sound on my recordings with both SM & Beta 58's. It's simple to get. It's easy to get. But I actually think this was a lip sync video. The reason why I think that is the guy playing the box, the box did not have a microphone on it. Yet it was quite solid in the recording. But then again, it sounded like the bass guitarist was also not completely in tune? His vocal microphone also sounded like it was gated to me? Did anybody hear him breathe? I don't think I did? But this is also why I love those SHURE microphones. They are tight. They are smooth. They sound like 87's. And they are actually one of my first choice for vocal microphones to begin with. And all you really need is a bunch of compression and a little touch of EQ. And then you can add your electronically created ambience and reverb. I think Chris would love to stick his Bruschetta reverb ambience gizmo on him? Yes I know it's not Bruschetta but it sure as hell tastes good. LOL.

Other algorithmic ambience would do a good job also.

It's not a lip sync. If it is, he could give Britney Spears some pointers because all of those plosives and little breaths are timed just right.

This is the way all songs recorded with any 58 should sound. It's so easy to get a good vocal recording with one of these. It's an SM-7, without the switches and in a more compact housing and they call it a 57 (58 with its hat on). And when recorded well will sound like a 7 or a 57 or a 87 all y'all's 7's. Remember " 7 ", is a lucky number and everyone's a winner.

yeah i meant an sm58, never used a beta. i love the senhiesser 441 on vox. fan of the sm7 too. when an 87ai is too much of a good thing, these mics seem to tone it down a bit, while maintaining similar qualities.
