Real drums?

i'm listening on a lap top but for some reason it sounds like the snare is leaning to the right. other songs i listen to don't sound like that. does anyone else hear that or is just me?? it might be the hat mic picking up the snare. ???

other than that i like how it sounds. i especially like the vocals blends how they are tucked in there forcing the listener to focus attention to hear them .... that's what i call a "compelling" listening experience. pretty nice there .....

You're probably right on there being bleed in the hat mic, and which is panned right a bit and probably the high end of which is accented on laptop speakers(The lows are EQ-ed out of the hat I believe. I use Reason Drum Kits who include bleed from all the drums in all mics, so it can be turned off. Should I take the snare bleed out of the hat, or is it part of that 'live' sound?

Also, can anyone tell me what the 'ripple' for lack of a better word is at :53? It's subtle on the word "panic."

What other major issues are people hearing?

i'm going to get my phones out and listen. i like to listen to posted songs on the cheap laptop speakers because that's typical of most people will use to listen to music.

i like the sound of the drums. those are on separate tracks? i wouldn't chop the hat up or gate it.

you might;

run the hat without the high pass on the hat.

pan the snare a bit to the left to compensate (stereo snare? ewww!). :( but check the 2 mix in mono to make sure you don't loose the snare (that would not be my choice.).

pan the hat to closer to center or mono (this i like). if you keep the hat track low enough you may even preserve the panning from the O/H's.

I guess I could centre the hat a bit and check things again. I'll want to go in and make a whole bunch of changes at once, so any other issues I should know about?

And any idea what that 'ripple' is?

You've done a wonderful job here. Great mix. Great sound. I don't hear any problem on that vocal near 53 seconds in? I don't hear any problem on that vocal anywhere. Ripple? Maybe you drank too much Ripple?

If I personally work to change anything, I'd add a little more warmth to that Leslie on the organ. You know something around 200 Hz? Just to give the song a little better supporting under liner. But it's tight. It's clean and it's wonderfully musical. I like to hear positive feelings songs like this.

I would have never guessed that that was software drums? Hell no, don't remove any of the bleed. It's what glues that old drum set together. It's what gives it a real feel. I was just blown away at what a superb job you did with them. I wasn't listening for the critical center snare drum blah blah. And I wouldn't move the positioning of that hat. Don't screw it up with improvements because it ain't broke. That drum set sounds like you recorded it in a real room. And if you make these bogus corrections, it won't be an improvement.

I'm not hearing the "ripple". I even listened through cans and I'm still not hearing it.

I think the drums sound good. I wouldn't muck with removing the "bleed". If you are after that real, live drum sound, which I think you've managed quite nicely, that bleed is part of the sound.

I think that too many people are concerned with trying to isolate every single instrument on a drum kit - perhaps it's because of sampled drums becoming more popular in the last decade or so - and attempting to isolate every single nuance or instrument on a real drum kit in an effort to make them sound more like discreetly sampled sounds, and many times the result is drum tracks that are sterile and lacking the live sound of a real kit.

I guess my personal opinion is that I find it odd/funny that sampled drums are supposed to sound like real drums and many people are trying to get real drums to sound like sampled drums which are supposed to emulate real drums... duh LOL ...

I think you've managed to use sampled drums in a pleasing way here, they sound authentic. To my ears, and as a drummer, the snare sounds a bit "papery", but that's a personal taste thing and it's most certainly not a deal-breaker for the song.

Oh....one more thing....I agree with Remy that the B3 needs some warmth and body.
