Mix Fest 2001 Information Index

Because the "Mix Fest 2001" information is scattered over many different threads across multiple RO pages, it can be difficult to find what you might be looking for. Here is most of the stuff you might want to reference. If any new decisions and announcements are made, please add a reply with a copy of any new reference information to this thread. And then we can all just refer back to this topic to find whatever we need in the days ahead. Please don't clutter this thread by posting further discussion; rather, only corrections and additional info. Mixerman (as moderator) should feel free to edit my posts here directly to correct any misinformation. Note: this basenote was posted while mixing was getting started.

To get a clue about what this is all about, skip down to "History", below. If you haven't already signed up, it might be too late. Check with the "pointman" for the song you most want to mix. Final mix compilation CD's might be available even to folks who did not participate in the mixing, but that has not been decided at this time.

News Flash:The MixFest has officially moved with MixerMan over to his ProSound forum. All further discussion and updates should take place there. Quick link to MixerMan's new forum:

    Rules:

    (posted Sept 6 by mixerman):

Everyone needs to pick a song to mix, sign up under that song name, and make contact with the pointman for that particular song. There can be more than 10 mixers per song. If 18 people want to mix one song, then let them.

The timeline for mixing should be broad. There is allot of file and tape trading, ...

I know some of you want to mix a couple or even a few songs. So do I. But do me a favor. For order's sake, let's all mix our designated song first. Then you can contact one of the people mixing another song to get the format you need.

    ...

    (posted Sept 25 by Mixerman):

  • 1. No replacing or adding instruments. Please use what you have. You are mixers, not producers. The point of this is to hear what people can do with the tracks they have. Having some kind of uniformity makes this easier to evaluate.
  • 2. No Mastering. I want the raw mix.
  • 3. Mix to any format, but it will ultimately need to go to CD for whoever is compiling the mixes.
  • 4. There is no rule 4
  • 5. This is not a contest. It is a learning experience.
  • 6. Enjoy.

You have 60 days to do the mix. Mixing period ends Dec. 1, 2001. I will extend that if I need to, but I'd like to get the compilations done before the end of the year.

    Have fun!

    History:

MixFest 2001 is a communal mixing exercise, where the same raw tracks to a few songs are made available to those forum participants who make their desire to be involved known to the right people before it's too late. Those folks each mix a song and send the mix back to ultimately be compiled with all the other mixes and sent out again to everyone so we discuss each other's mixes. This is the first time we have tried to do this, so it is being organized as we go, and it is dependant completely upon volunteer effort.

The rest of the history so far isn't as interesting, as it tends to split into 5 different histories. Each song supposedly had one official thread for people to sign up to mix that one song, but "UFO" got splintered by some discussion over a snare track that had to be fixed. See the "Sign-up/Discuss" link above for each song.

MixFest 2001 is done, now. But out of a whole bunch of folks who supposedly started out participating, we only had 14 people send in mixes for the final compilation (17 total mixes). The compilation got distributed, and most of the discussion of the mixes has happened already, but it is still going on. If you were one of those folks who somehow missed the boat, then you might nevertheless want to join in the discussion. Supposedly, all the final compilation disks are spoken for. But don't let that stop you from trying to persuade someone to make a copy for you (might take some money).

Find the recent talk where it was all moved to, on Mixerman's forum (at that other site). Here are some quick links for you:
