For the western digital take the jumper off...you don't need it on there. It's a single drive basically and that's how it should be configured. Once that is done you should see it but if you don't you need to go into the Logical Disk Manager and set it up!
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Manager.
There you will see the drive as unallocated and you need to set it up as a new partition and format it.

I had a similar issue, but with a Seagate drive (Barracuda 30Gb), that randomly disappeared from my configuration (it is in a removable tray), so I tried to mount it directly to the IDE and it's back again, defective tray? I think the drive is a little slower than my other Maxtors.

I would also ask where on the cable the drive is? With the newer controllers having it at the end or in the middle can make it see it or not. Additionally, in the motherboards bios, you do have AUTO selected for the drive type correct?

Removing the jumper from the WD-HD made it work fine. As you said, that drive is a single drive at the moment.
Question: If I add another HD on that IDE2-cable ( like a backup-drive) then I should set the jumper back on "Master"? Or should I use the "Cable Select"?
The reason why I ask this is:
I'm thinking of getting a new OS-drive (WD 40 Gb 8 Mb cache) and use my Seagate as a back-up-drive.
And here's a tricky question:
Since I've done most of the tweaks on my Seagate, can I save the register on another drive, put in the WD 40 as OS-drive, install windows and then import the register with the tweaks?...Or is this Mission Impossible? It sure would be a time saver.

DS Sultan, of course I put my HD's on the "Master end" of the IDE-cables...
When I started this DAW I set the jumpers on both HD's as "Master". But then I had some trouble with XP finding the right size of the OS-drive (Seagate)... So I finally set the jumper on that one as "Cable Select" and then it worked.

Tore...instead of reinstalling your OS on the new drive...do what I did...ghost it onto the new drive! This way everything goes with it! Simple as that...disk to disk ghost transfer is that fastest and easiest way to do it! You'll be up and running in no time at all and it will seem as though you didn't have to do anything at all except swap some drives around!

By the way, I have some questions about the tweaks:
1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer
Create a new DWORD sub-key named
"AlwaysUnloadDLL" set to 1

I don't get it, should make a new key and a DWORD?
If so, what should I name the key?

2. "Enableballoontips" I didn't have it so I added that as a new DWORD... it didn't work.
So I went into the register again to see... and I had another DWORD there named "StartBalloontips"
Should I change the value on that one and delete my "Enableballoontips" ?
3. In the long Control Panel>Administrative Tools:
Services-list I had this line: Intel(R)NMS "Auto"
Should this one be disabled ?

Otherwise this tweak guide has been great fun... :c: Even if it takes some time to find the right stuff since my XP-pro is in swedish... all the translations are not obvious.

The program by Norton(or Symantec) called Ghost can literally copy the image of the disk to the new disk. Simply find yourself a freeware version, there are some available, and install the new disk anywhere in your system..,..doesn't matter where, and set Ghost to do a disk to disk transfer. Once done replace the old OS drive with the new one and you are all done
Don't worry about the Always Unload DLL registry entry unless you use the internet on the machine constantly. You need to create a DWORD and that's it if you do want to do it.
No, don't change the Start Balloon Tips in any way...make sure the value for EnableBalloonTips is "0" and not "1".
You have to restart for that to work.
Did you install an Intel application of some sort? If so disable it.

LOL Indeed he has quite a following of Disciples. He has bailed my ass out many times. Perhaps we could all pitch-in and buy him a laptop for his wedding, so that he can stay in touch on his honeymoon! A lot of hotels and motels have internet access now!
