Imagine you have the perfect studio and the perfect control room. What next?
How do you work? do you follow the signal path and start with a great mic collection, then pre's then a desk etc?
I can take care of the mic collection but what is the ultimate desk? I'm not too bothered about features, I'm after sound quality! I guess this means analog.
Add a collection of stunning mic preamps and outboard gear.
Is a Studer 2" the way to go?
Add a DAW into the equation. Then what? What are the best monitors out there? I've used the big, soffit mounted mains before but they seem to me to be only for show. I tend to work from nearfields apart from when I need to impress a client.
Have I missed anything?

The one with the gear that lets you get the sounds you want and lets you work the way you want to. What your asking is a deeply personal, almost religious question. Some people like API consoles, some prefer Neve, SSL, Harrison, Trident etc. and hate the others. Can you tell me which one I like better? With the right people, almost any equipment could be used in a studio. In fact what equipment to get is probably more dependent on the taste of your clients than anything else.
I look at studios and gear as being whatever it takes to leave ONLY the performance of the people involved as an issue to those working on the project.
