does anyone have any advice they'd like to share concerning getting a punchy yet smooth tone when recording trumpet?

I have read a lot about the merits of a ribbon mic in this circumstance. Not owning one myself i will endevour to seek one out... but what i am really looking for are any techniques that i can start experimenting with. The sound that i am getting currently is too 'choked' and brash...
